**Description**
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES** (Other duties may be assigned):
* Maintains and cares for plants, vegetation, trees, and grounds for the Botanical garden areas.
* Prunes and trims trees and shrubs as needed and/or on a seasonal basis.
* Monitors mulch; adds new mulch as needed and keeps beds weed-free.
* Replaces unhealthy plants with new plants.
* Monitors plant nutrition and pest activity; schedules, prepares, and applies fertilizers and pesticides; calibrates fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide applicators.
* Operates and maintains, through minor repairs, common horticultural machines, and irrigation systems.
* Irrigation of plant materials in the garden.
* Operates horticulture equipment including but not limited to City Park vehicles.
**QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:**
* A bachelors degree from a four-year college or university preferred; two or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Louisiana State Pesticide Certification preferred
* A valid Louisiana driver's license.
* Knowledge of irrigation systems and repairs helpful.
* Knowledge of Southern Louisiana plant material
**Machinery/Tools/Equipment Requirements:** Must be familiar with using lawnmowers, weed eaters, aerators, pressure washers, chainsaws, pruning equipment, blowers, sprayers, edgers, basic landscaping tools, and be able to operate utility vehicles.
**Physical Requirements:**
This position is a physically demanding one. This job requires 100% working out in the elements, so the ability to withstand hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters is a must.
You must be a team player and be able to interact well with others within the department, as well as staff from other departments. Good communication is important within the team.
This job requires the ability to pick up items weighing up to 75 lbs.
Must be able to operate power equipment in varying degrees of temperatures for long periods of time.
Regular talking and the ability to express and exchange ideas by means of language expected.
Regular hearing and the ability to perceive the nature of sounds.
Ability to read and write required.
**Environmental/Working Conditions:**
Working long hours between breaks or meals required.
Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner required.
May be exposed to high, medium, or low noise intensity.
Constant contact with co-workers required.
Contact with guests is expected to be courteous and respectful.
This position requires exposure to the elements and to dirty conditions.
Understanding safe practices are essential in order to minimize unsafe working conditions. Use of safety gear required.
